Greentraveller's Top Tips: If you've some time before commencing this spectacular cycling trip, why not spend some time in Biarritz after arriving by rail. While hilly in some areas, the natural and historical charms of this picturesque coastal city can easily be explored on foot. We recommend a relaxing stroll along the beach or a visit to the Museum of the Sea to learn more about the creatures of the ocean. After your cycling tour, with time to spare in Perpignan before your journey home, a visit to Le Castillet, the city's most famous landmark, is highly recommended and within walking distance from the station.

Overview of Biking Holiday from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean

A classic, challenging road cycling holiday over famous Tour de France cols in the Pyrenees. This version of the famous 'Pyrenees Raid' cycling adventure starts from the Atlantic resort of Hendaye and ends in the historic port of Collioure on the Mediterranean. Amidst breathtaking scenery you will cycle some of the most challenging road passes in the Pyrenees, including the highest of all, the legendary Col de Tourmalet (2115m / 6939ft).

Following scenic country roads, during the course of the cycling day you will encounter the hairpins and other challenges of the world's toughest sporting event, as we cycle arguably the most beautiful of the Tour de France climbs - the cols of Aubisque and Solour. Predominantly cycling with the prevailing westerly wind at your backs, the cycling takes you from the Basque territory to the land of the Catalans. Experience a variety of cultures, as well as superb local hospitality and regional food. This is a truly classic road cycling journey and is surely a 'must do' ride for 'Sportive' riders and cycling enthusiasts alike.

While this is definitely a challenging cycling holiday, comfortable hotels, good food and vehicle support, make it accessible. Vehicle support is usually on hand. This is a trip for keen road cyclists that enjoy the challenge of climbs and descents day after day. The total amount of ascent and descent you ride is a staggering 17,950 metres (58,894 feet) and so this is not a holiday for the faint hearted. Although by spreading the riding over 7 days it becomes a pleasant experience with time to rest and recover each day. You'll follow a mixture of main roads and back roads with your bike route always trying to choose the quietest option. The organisers have also chosen the quietest times of the year and arguably when the scenery is at its most spectacular.

This is totally supported riding - at the start of the day, when the group sets off biking, your kit bag will be loaded into the support vehicle and transported to the next overnight halt. Apart from a fixed rendezvous for lunch, you are free to cycle at your own pace but the support vehicle is never far away. We must stress that apart from the emergency tool kit and spares that you would take on any day ride, you will not be required to carry any luggage. Stunning scenery, atmospheric overnight accommodation and a magnificent linear route make this an unforgettable cycling holiday experience. Average 109 km /68 miles per day.
