Spectacularly set on an azure blue lake and dominated by the four towers of its imposing 12th century castle, Annecy is a picture-postcard alpine destination which forms the gateway to Mont Blanc and Lake Geneva. Not-to-be-missed sights include the exquisite 15th century church of St-Maurice, originally part of a Dominican convent, the stately Palais d’Isle and the Musée du Château, the former home of the Counts of Genevois, which is now a well-stocked museum of local art and artefacts. Annecy has many good eateries, with a cluster of particularly fine restaurants around the chateau.

Hotel Carlton***
Located near the station, this traditional, family run hotel is in the heart of town, in an ideal position for exploring the old quarter or taking a boat on the lake. The hotel offers good facilities, including a bar. All 55 air-conditioned rooms have bath or shower and WC, hairdryer, satellite TV, telephone and minibar. Buffet breakfast is included. Single and double bedded rooms are with shower, twin, triple, quadruple bedded rooms only with bath.
