Christmas Market Holidays

Christmas Markets are quickly becoming a favourite for winter holiday seekers throughout Europe. The most traditional, and arguably still the best, are in Germany where the concept of St Nicolas and his merry elves began centuries ago.

There is also something about German delicacies, especially gluhwein and ginger cookies, that lend themselves to strolling through festively decorated streets.

One of the most popular is in Cologne, whose impressive gothic cathedral towers above quaint festive stalls that line the riverbank. Berlin is known for their more edgy celebrations, whilst Munich puts on medieval themed fun for all the family.

However, Christmas markets aren’t just about tradition. Lille celebrates modern day culture in the form of outdoor performances during its festival of light every December and Brussels welcomes contemporary food and drink from around the world.

And of course the best thing about Christmas Markets, is that they are all easily reachable by train.
