The picturesque town of Chamonix sits below perhaps Western Europe's most intimidating mountain, Mont Blanc (4810m), and is known throughout the globe as a hub for trekking, mountaineering and skiing. Adventure-seekers are drawn by the countless peaks and needle-sharp spires, which also provide the stunning backdrop to every walking route through the valley. Your base will be a comfortable, family-run hotel in the heart of Chamonix, and you'll use local trains, chairlifts and cable cars to give access to some of the higher slopes.

You'll summit Mont Buet (3096m), visit the Albert Premier hut on the edge of the Le Tour Glacier and take on variations of the popular classics. This is a perfect trip for those already experienced in walking in the area, offering a fantastic insight into less travelled and more challenging routes. It also acts as an excellent introductory week before attempting Mont Blanc itself.

Here's a brief overview of the itinerary:

  • Day 1: Arrive at Les Frasserands
  • Day 2: Train to Le Buet then onto the Berard Valley. Cross forests and meadows to the Loriaz refuge and enjoy great views of the Mont Blanc massif
  • Day 3: Return to Vallorcine and explore the surrounding peaks. From the Col du Balme you'll have unbeaten views of Mont Blanc
  • Day 4: A true classic today, up to Col des Montents and up through ridges and paths towards Lac Blanc. Then an easy descent to Flégère and a cable car to the bottom of the valley.
  • Day 5: A free day! Maybe spend the day in around Chamonix exploring the shops and cafes, or take the fantastic Aiguille du Midi cable car.
  • Day 6: Today you'll explore the bottom end of the Chamonix valley. There's a gentle climb to Prarion and then a gentle descend via Col de Voza.
  • Day 7: The longest day of the trip - a trek to the summit of Brevent with Mont Blanc in the distance. Descend following a beautiful ridge path and stop for coffee as the Bellachat refuge.
  • Day 8: Leave from Les Bossons
