Holidays in Poitou-Charentes, France
The lush, green landscape of Poitou-Charentes is one of the best places to enjoy a nature holiday in France. The gentle, undulating countryside is easily accessible to everyone, offering an unrivalled mix of sand dunes and salt marshes, vineyards and valleys, not to mention the glorious beaches of the French Atlantic Coast.
The region can be divided into rather distinct destinations. La Rochelle and Ile de Re offer visitors the chance to explore the coast, by bike, kayak or foot and sample fine seafood, on offer in the dramatic, historic port of La Rochelle. The Marais Poitevin is often referred to as France’s ‘Green Venice’, the second largest wetland in France. The landscape has been carved out into a series of waterways, providing a wildlife watching paradise. Cognac country, as the name suggests, offers an excellent chance to explore the region’s delicacies and the Atlantic coast has some of Europe’s finest surfing beaches and windswept coastal footpaths.
