Event: 'Outstanding Week' in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty

The UK’s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty have come together to organise a 10-day programme of events to help people enjoy these specially protected areas.

The events kick off today (Saturday 19 September) and continue to Sunday 27 September.

Jill Smith, of The National Association for Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, explains: “Outstanding Week is an opportunity for you to get involved and get out into our AONBs’ outstanding landscapes to enjoy country shows, dark sky discovery nights, walking festivals, archaeology walks, wood fairs, foraging and local food festivals, wildlife walks, coastal and marine days, thatching courses, drystone walling competitions, charcoal making, bioblitz, inspiration through art and music and many, many other activities."

Over 100 events are being organised throughout the UK. Here's a taste of some of the events taking place:

  • 21 September: Forest of Bowland, Dark Sky Discovery
  • 23 September: Mendip Hills, Somerset: Starfish Walk on Black Down
  • 24 September: Howardian Hills: Free Tour of the Yorkshire Arboretum 
  • 24-27 September: Nidderdale: Pateley Bridge Walking Festival
  • 26-27 September: Ross-on-Wye Walking Festival
  • 26-27 September: Suffolk Coast & Heaths Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival
  • 27 September: Tamar Valley Polperro Fishermen's Choir
  • 27 September: Llŷn Cilan Guided Walk
  • 27 September: Cotswolds: A Barrow full of Romans Guided Walk
  • 27 September: Chichester Harbour: Discovery Boat Trip on the Solar Heritage
