October's special offers & travel tips

Now is a great time to find cheaper train tickets to Europe for Christmas & New Year...

French winter train tickets went on sale this week, offering fantastic deals on train travel throughout France as well as connections from Paris and Lille to other European cities.

The new timetable features increased services on routes popular with skiers, such as the Paris to Bourg St Maurice overnight service, which now runs almost every night throughout the season, see: How to book cheap train tickets this winter.

For more ideas on where to go this winter, see our section on Winter Holidays, and our new section: Ski Chalets in France. We now also provide information on how to travel to over 40 ski areas in Europe by train: Plan Your Journey by Train.

I'm delighted to say that we're celebrating our 5th birthday this month. Since 2006, greentraveller has grown from a blog into what the Sunday Times has described is "The first place to look for green holidays". We were also thrilled to be included in the Guardian's recent feature on 'the best travel websites ever' and have just heard we have been shortlisted for the 2011 British Travel Press Travel Editors' Green Award.

To celebrate we've compiled a series of our Top Five holiday ideas. Here's a selection:

>> Top 5 Alternative Winter Holidays
>> Top 5 Treehouses in the UK
>> Top 5 Yurt camps in the UK
>> Top 5 Holiday huts in the UK
>> Top 5 Green Hen Parties

We'll be adding more of these Top Five features over the comings weeks. If you have any suggestions for what you'd like us to feature, please do send them to me by email.

Less carbon, more fun!

Best wishes,

A 4 night stay at the Dapper Camping Club in Wales is now only £295

One of Spain's top luxury campsites just got even better

Guests staying at either Westview or Lasswade guesthouses in Wales between now and December will get the chance to take out electric bikes for the day free of charge. The bikes are a fantastic fun and green way to get around the Welsh countryside or nip down to the local pub for a long, cosy lunch.   A rather dashing bell tent that makes more than a passing nod to 20s glamour. Fix yourself a gin & tonic, cordially greet the ceramic leopard then take to the veranda to enjoy the great outdoors of Brecon. The tents are cosy enough for an autumnal break, containing cosy large double beds. Now all for an amazingly discounted price! The Hoopee Yurt Hotel is one of the best run yurt camps we've visited. Luxurious tents, terrific food and gorgeous location - in three hectares of olive groves and cork oak forest with spectacular views of the Grazalema mountains of Andalucia. The new plunge pool and on site bar have made the experience even better.

Sue has the B&B business down to a fine art. For a relaxing weekend in family-run, farmhouse setting, with access to glorious National Park scenery literally on the doorstep, Beechenhill is hard to beat. The fresh organic breakfasts are a great start to a day exploring the wonderful Peak District. The farm has both B&B and self-catering options on site.  Thanks to the combination of the stunning location, the wealth of activities on the doorstep, and the top-end accommodation, this is a great place for anyone looking to make the most of their Cornish experience. Also, following the completion of the arbour and indoor venue, this is now a perfect setting for anyone considering an alternative green wedding.
Middlewick is a pretty, rambling farm just under Glastonbury Tor. It is a great place to go on holiday as a family or group of friends, with plenty of communal facilities and safe, large open spaces to let the kids run wild.
