February Newsletter: A word from the editor

Nominations are now being invited for the 2011 Guardian Green Travel List.

The Guardian's Green Travel List is a guide to companies that have shown evidence of commitment to community, place and the environment. If you've been inspired by a company, project, organisation or initiative, we'd love to hear about it.

We're particularly looking for innovative projects, such as hotels that provide their own renewable energy, visitor centres and attractions that have significantly cut their carbon emissions, low emissions transport initiatives, and authentic community projects worldwide that genuinely give back to the local people and the destination.

Please send suggestions to: info@greentraveller.co.uk, stating clearly:

1. The name of the project and relevant website

2. The category you'd like to nominate it for:
  • Accommodation
  • Transport
  • Days Out/Visitor Attractions
  • Community Projects
  • Holidays
3. Why you think it should be included in the Green Travel List (200 words max)

Best wishes,
Richard Hammond

“This is one of the best family-friendly hotels in the country. The staff are extremely friendly, the food first class and there are sea views in both the dining area and lounge. The hotel is just a short stroll with the buckets and spades down to the wonderful sandy beach at Mawgan Porth.“ Reviewed by Richard Hammond
“Bill and Sukie are the perfect hosts and created a holiday dream - this is more than just a home away from home. This is 5 star, responsible luxury - the chance to sample sustainable working croft in action within the stunning natural environment of the Ardnamurchan Peninsula.” Reviewed by Kash Bhattacharya
“The Quinta overlooks a working organic farm with horses, chickens, elaborate fruit & vegetable patches, a few stylish and secluded yurts and a spectacular view of Portugal's highest mountain range the Serra da Estrela. This is a place to come to get away from it all, reconnect with nature and live off the land. “ Reviewed by Anouk van den Eijnde

Our pick of the best conservation, volunteering and learning holidays

Dolphin Conservation Holiday in Greece

Volunteer to protect the Jizera Mountains, Czech Republic

Shropshire Wildlife Safari, England

Dolphin Conservation Holiday
Volunteer Holiday in Jizeera Mountains Czech Republic
Learning Holidays in England
From renovating a fishing lake in Lincolnshire to protecting dolphins in their ecosystem in Greece, conservation holidays are a rewarding way to see the world. Live and work with local people on scientific or environmental projects from a weekend break to longer term placements. If you’re looking for a truly meaningful holiday, why not give something back on a productive and enjoyable volunteer holiday, from restoring ecosystems in the Czech Republic to collecting and surveying the litter  washed ashore along the fragile coasts of Cornwall.
Our range of learning holidays such as the wildlife safari are as varied as they are refreshing: learn how to identify a tree just from its bark or a bird from its song; learn the secrets of Bushcraft or discover the creepy crawlies in Pembrokeshire. You’ll come back with a whole new set of skills.
