The Cambrian Train Lines, Mid Wales

Posted by Richard Hammond at 11:48 on Saturday 13 July 2013

The Cambrian Lines are two train lines that run through specatcular scenery in the heart of Mid Wales.

The 'Main Line' runs from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and the 'Coast Line' (which splits off from the Main Line at Machynlleth) runs up the northern coast of Cardigan Bay from Machynlleth to Pwllheli.

There are mainline connections from Birmingham New Street and Birmingham International to Shrewbury from where you can board the Cambrian Lines.

The main line runs from Shrewbury via Welshpool, Newtown, Caersws, Machynlleth, Dovey Junction, Borth, Aberystwyth.

Cambrian Coast Line:
The coast line runs up the northern coast of Cardian Bay, from Machynlleth to Tywyn, Fairbourne, Barmouth, Harlech, Porthmadadog, Criccieth and Pwllheli.

NB: In general, if you're traveling from Shrewsbury on the Cambrian Lines, board one of the front 2 coaches to travel to Aberystwyth on the Main Line, and one of the 2 rearmost coaches to travel on the Coast Line. The train 'splits' at Machynlleth. Be sure to check with the guards in case of any change to this.
