As we celebrate our Greentraveller's Guide to Las Alpujarras, Paul Bloomfield heads to the region to get a taste for ham-drying and home-cooking around Mairena and discovers that the flavours of Las Alpujarras reflect the ingredients, lifestyles and history of its people.

Bordering the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada National Park and crammed with beautiful hillhop towns, fabulous artisan food producers and wonderful walking and cycling trails, Las Alpujarras is the Spanish rural idyll, much of it still untouched by time and tourism. Greentraveller's Guide to Las Alpujarras shows residents and visitors how to make the most of the area in a way that has a low impact on the environment and a positive impact on the local economy.

Andalucian Trails - Trekking in Spain

Nestled at the eastern end of the Sierra Nevada, the traditional whitewashed village of Mairena is the perfect base from which to explore this delightful corner of Spain on our centre based, guided, walking holiday. Our welcoming and tastefully appointed 'casa rural' accommodation, with its organic fruit farm and much praised restaurant, has been rated by the Lonely Planet as the best place to stay in the Alpujarra. We have 5 days of leisurely hiking in the company of a local guide, with easy options in the delightful Laroles and Laujar valleys, where we will be walking through olive and almond groves. There are also tougher offerings, such as the ascent of El Morron (2756m), on one of the main ridges of the Sierra El Morron Nevada. A free day allows us to relax in the village or take a trip to the famous Alhambra palace, a gem of Moorish architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is the perfect holiday for anyone into good food, spectacular mountain scenery and relaxing walking.

Authentic and comfortable, our base is a stunning, 800 year old, restored villa; the perfect place from which to explore this beautiful part of Spain.
