Why we've chosen Wyresdale Park (Country Retreat):

Wyresdale Park (Country Retreat) is surely the original setting for Swallows and Amazons. A lake for boating and swimming, tall trees for rope swings and hidden coves for hammocks and campfires; a wild fell for exploring on foot and countryside characters just like Arthur Ransome described them. The estate is uniquely positioned as the gateway to the undiscovered beauty of The Forest of Bowland (AONB), and the springboard to England’s world-renowned Lake District, Windemere a forty five minute drive away.

Your stay at Wyresdale is truly a retreat from the modern world, each encampment having its own outdoor shower, hot tub, campfire circle and kids hideaway tent, not to mention the luxury of the main ‘safari’ tent with its double beds and hand carved furniture. Each encampment is sheltered by the woods and looks out on to Wyresdale lake, with boating jetties for whenever you want to set sail.

At the Hall you will find the locally renowned Walled Garden Café, lovingly run by the lady of the manor from the restored Victorian glasshouses and serving quintessential creams teas, light lunches and hearty English breakfasts. The surrounding gardens feature lawns for croquet & football, tall trees for climbing and an eccentric old ‘lord’, known to take highly embellished tours of the ‘big house’.

If you’re staying for a weekend there is no need to leave Wyresdale: hang your hammock, light your campfire and enjoy the rejuvenation of the outdoors from the comfort of your tented lodge. If coming for a week, be sure to explore the sublime Lake District and the Tolkein-esque beauty of the Forest of Bowland!

Greentraveller's Insight: The Featherdown Farm Tent
The tents are large enough to fit six people – a maximum of five adults and one child up to 12 years old. Cooking & heating is provided by a cosy wood-burning stove, plus you'll get one crate of firewood provided per day. There is an ample living area (45 square metres), which includes a flushing toilet and spacious, comfortable beds. Each tent includes bed and kitchen linen, the tent’s kitchen has cold running water and there are hot showers on site.

This location is set on the grounds of a gorgeous Country Estate which is a bit different to the working Feather Down Farm locations with their farm animals. Based on self-catering you can cook up a nice slow-cooking meal on the wood burning stove. There is no honesty shop at the campsite but local shops are very nearby.

Top green features at Wyresdale Park (Country Retreat):

  • Off grid - no mains power

  • Wood-burning stove for heating and cooking, hot tubs are also wood burning
