How doesTregulland Cottage and Barn minimise its impact on the environment and contribute to a sense of place?
Tregulland earned a place on the 2011 Green Travel List for their outstanding eco-efforts and commitment to community, place and the environment. The buildings have been refurbished to beyond building regulations levels of insulation and energy performance. This includes insulation in floors, ceilings and walls and high performance double glazing. A biomass boiler provides heating and hot water for the barn, cottage and swimming pool. Hot water is also provided by solar thermal panels in the summer. All heating central heating is underfloor and can be individually controlled in every room and bathroom. There are two wood burners in each house and logs for this are provided on site. A heat recovery and ventilation system ensures that the air in the buildings is always fresh and heat is not unnecessarily wasted by extract fans. Low energy and LED lighting has been used throughout and A rated appliances are used where possible.
All timber used during the build was FSC or recycled and where possible they have used vintage and upcycled furniture. The property has its own bore hole which provides all the water for the site and its own waste disposal system that terminates in a reed bed. The Cornish spring water also fills the pool which is the country's first indoor Clearwater pool, which is naturally filtered and uses no chemicals. Recycling bins are provided for plastic, glass, paper and compost bins. Toiletries are sourced locally from St Kitts Herbery just 5 miles away and large refillable dispensers are used rather than miniatures. Local produce is used as much as possible. To minimise their impact on the Cornish countryside and its biodiversity, guests are encouraged to travel by public transport.
