How does Trafford Hall minimise its impact on the environment and contribute to a sense of place?

Trafford Hall has been built using Segal method timber frames, which uses sustainable green oak and larch as well as WarmCell insulation to levels far beyond British standards and turf roofs which encourages a variety of wildlife.
The Stable building uses a combination of solar power and bio-fuels to provide all the heating, including hot water Solar PV (electric) panels to complement Solar Thermal panels. The 3 rows of 13 panels can generate up-to 9.5kW when it’s sunny. Electrical power is from 100% renewable sources and energy efficient lighting is used throughout. All walls, roofs and floors are well insulated with a recycled newspaper product. Chimney balloons have been inserted into unused fireplaces to reduce air drafts and windows, shutters, doors, and floors have been draft proofed to stop hot air escaping the building. Radiator reflector panels have been installed to direct heat away from the walls and back into the room.

To reduce landfill waste, the owners recycle as much waste as possible and gardens are nourished by compost, produced from kitchen and garden waste collected in large compost bins, leaf mould bins and a wormery. The gardens use rainwater as well as a seep hose system to minimize water waste. Low-water systems have been installed for showers, hand basins and toilets. The gardens provide seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs, which the catering team incorporates into the seasonal dishes whenever possible. Local suppliers are used whenever possible. Trafford Hall is easily accessible by public transport and guests are encouraged to arrive car-free to reduce the impact of their holiday. Trafford Hall made significant progress towards our 2012 carbon neutral goal by achieving Level 4 of the Green Dragon Standard for our Environmental Management System in February 2011. The EMS includes an environmental review of all the facilities and services, a monitoring system for recording fuel and resource use, a legislation compliance audit and an ambitious action plan for minimising their environmental impact. They are currently working towards ISO 14001:2004 accreditation.
