In a secluded corner of the lovely East Yorkshire countryside, our straw bale holiday cottages are an ideal place to relax and get away from it all on an eco-friendly holiday.
Both the Straw Bale Cottage and the Straw Bale Cabin are unique, beautiful properties, which we built ourselves using locally grown wheat straw - as well as a great deal of tender loving care.
This is sustainable tourism at its best: buildings made of natural materials, in a peaceful countryside setting, using renewable energy, local food, organic towels and a huge range of other environmentally friendly features. What better way to unwind?
The Straw Bale Cabin is the perfect escape to the countryside and is unique in being the first “mobile” straw bale building in the world (as far as we know) as well as the UK’s first holiday home to be constructed from straw bales. It has a very special feel, which is frequently remarked upon - perhaps owing to the use of natural materials throughout, the care and attention to detail, or the fact that it has been handmade especially for guests' enjoyment.
The Straw Bale Cottage is the UK’s first two bedroom holiday cottage made with straw bale walls. This spacious accommodation includes an entrance lobby with cloakroom (with a shower), lounge, kitchen and study. Upstairs it boasts two large bedrooms, as well as a spacious bathroom between the two.
You can just relax and unwind in the properties' natural surroundings or explore the quiet lanes and paths of East Yorkshire on foot or on the bicycles that we provide for guests' use. We are just a mile from Howden railway station, so it's easy to reach us by train - and the station also provides great access to the wider area for those who wish to venture a little further. There's plenty to see and do on day trips into places such as Hull, historic York or vibrant Leeds, as well as the smaller towns along the way.
Nearby, you can discover the pretty, historic market town of Howden (3 miles away), which is full of friendly family-run shops and restaurants, as well as inspiring architecture and a dynamic arts scene.
Why is this a greener holiday?
To truly minimise the environmental impact, guests are encouraged to arrive by public transport: the nearest train station is North Howden. From there, it’s just a mile to the accommodation. Guests can be collected by prior arrangement. Onsite the owners have taken a number of green measures to reduce the environmental impact of their tourism business, including solar panels to heat water and use of local materials in the construction.
