How does Shenval B&B minimise its impact on the environment and contribute to a sense of place?

Central heating and hot water is provided by wood pellets boiler; the pellets are sourced and manufactured in Scotland. The building is fully insulated and double glazed. They have been using low energy bulbs since 1995. All appliances are A or AA rated. They use minimal electricity and are expected to be below 2000kW in 2012. Cistern capacities have been reduced with water savers. All washing and cleaning products are fully bio-degradable. Rain water is harvested for use in the garden. Everything that is compostable is composted in the organic fruit and vegetable garden, the remainder is sorted and recycled; very little goes to landfill. All bedrooms have recycling bins and guests are advised on how to use them. All cleaning products and toiletries are bought in bulk containers from a local workers cooperative whole foods supplier.

The owners are members of the Highlands and Islands Organic Association and also belong to a local organic vegetable grower box scheme. Most of the food used is certified organic. They organically grow some of vegetable and fruit crops and use locally-sourced, fair trade and seasonal produce wherever possible. They also serve home baked organic breads, cakes and organic jams. To minimise their impact on the surrounding natural environment and its biodiversity, guests are encouraged to arrive by public transport. The organic garden provides a haven for wildlife. The owners are members of a local community forest trust that enhances the local environment and promotes low carbon outdoor activities, including walking, cycling, wildlife-watching, horse riding. They are also currently working with others to set up a long distance walking trail.
