How does Ribby Hall Village minimise its impact on the environment and contribute to a sense of place?
To reduce their energy consumption, they have been working with an energy consultant for a number of years. Projects have included fitting smart thermostats in all of the self catering accommodation, variable speed drives on our two pools, LED lighting projects and timing controls on the vending machines. The new holiday property has an air exchange ‘eco’ boiler for water and space heating. To minimise landfill waste, they separate paper, cardboard, glass, plastic and cans from general waste for recycling and food waste is composted in the ‘Rocket’ in-vessel composter for use on the grounds. Their waste service provider also sorts all the waste that goes into ‘general waste’ in order to remove any recyclable material that has slipped through the net. With these efforts, around 58% of total waste is diverted from landfill. During the ongoing refurbishment programme all of the cottages are fitted with low flow showers and small cistern toilets. The majority of the taps in communal areas are self closing push taps with aerators.
Lancashire is a rich and varied producer of food and so they source as much as possible from within this region and work with the suppliers to achieve this. They also have a vegetable garden within the grounds which provides produce for use in the kitchens as well as cut flowers for diners to enjoy. Guests are encouraged to arrive by public transport and enjoy activities on foot and cycle around the village once they are here; they are also midway through developing a nature trail around the village. They also charge for those customers wanting to bring a second car to encourage less carbon consumption and this money is donated to The Lancashire Wildlife Trust.
