Why we've chosen Quinta do Bom Despacho, Azores, Portugal

Quinta do Bom Despacho is a family-run historic manorhouse that has been re-designed to become the home of sustainable holidays and events in the Azorean capital. We have a natural pool and a range of organic gardens that will complement your stay of historic splendour and commitment to sustainable development.

Eco credentials:

How do you reduce your draw on energy:
We have re-done the entire water and heating system to include solar thermal hot-water, heat recovery burners and eco-efficient pellet burners for heating. We have insulated all hot water plumbing to conserve energy and the system has been designed to prevent unecessary heat losses.

Most rooms have no TV, as we make them available in common areas instead. We have sensors for lights coming on and off in common hallways and corridors and we have minimal outdoor lighting.

How you minimise the amount of waste you send to landfill:
We have recycling bins all over the house (paper, plastics and glass), and a wide range of composting facilities in the gardens. We also have composting toilets and a small reedbed system.

We provide guests with empty water bottles for filling and a range of re-usable cloth bags so they reduce the amount of plastic they buy during their stay.

How you reduce your consumption of water:
We have water savers on all cisterns (bottles), and we have water collection gullies and storage tanks and bins all over the property, and we have overflow systems that end up in a drip irrigation system for the orchards and vegetable gardens. We have composting toilets outside that require no use of water at all (no flushing, also called dry toilets). We have a reedbed system that receives the urine and grey waters from outside showers and wash-basins: when that water is treated is flows into a yam bed. We only provide linnen changes once a week and guests have access to the washing machines if they wish - all cleaning products we use have a certified eco-label.

How much of the food your serve is sourced locally (where possible):
We are a self-catering business. However, all rooms have a harvest basket so guests can help themselves to organic fruit n veg from our gardens (just under a hectare). We also have an honesty bar where guests can help themselves to a range of locally produced, certified "social economy" foods and other goods.

Do you actively encourage guests to arrive on foot, by bike and by public transport?:
We offer info on all types of transport and have a solid partnership with a local bike rental and tours company. we provide a 10% discount for bike riding guests. It is hard to avoid the flying bit, being an island, though....

Additional information:
We have a 200 sq metre natural swimming pond which we have landscaped around with borders and embankments planted up with an impressive range of Azorean endemic species, both woody and herbaceous. This wildife rich area is an amazing relaxation spot for guests as well as a bonus for the fruit n veg production. We also have a sensory garden with many aromatic and medicinal herbs which provides an awesome pollinators´ paradise.
