Some areas seem to fall off the tourist map - and this is one of them. These hills of central Portugal remain traditional, beautiful, and unspoilt; ancient towns, crumbling villages and stunning views of sweeping forest and farmland. The people who live here enjoy a good life of locally-grown produce, good, affordable wine, swimming in the rivers and relaxing on the beaches in the summer. You can join that life for a holiday at Quinta da Ribeira - a restored historic mill complex from the seventeenth and eighteenth century.
Enjoy the pleasure of being amongst lush green scenery, olive and fruit groves and native forests. Access the mountains and choose from a selection of bathing rivers.
This wing built 1776 is independent of the main house with its own entrance and elevated patio. It enjoys a quiet position, and retains its original windows, doors and architectural features. The simple and comfortable kitchen is furnished with a stove, toaster, fridge, dining table and sofa.
Why is this a greener holiday?
First, to truly minimise the environmental impact, guests are encouraged to arrive by public transport: Portugal is accessible by train from the UK, and thereafter buses and trains from Lisbon and Porto continue on to Coimbra. Regular buses connect Coimbra to Vila Nova de Poiares (45 minutes). From Poiares, the property is a short taxi ride away or it may be possible to pre-organise a pickup with the owners.
Onsite the owners have implemented a number of green initiatives including restoring an unused traditional building for tourism purposes, rather than constructing a new one. They have ensured the conservation of original architectural features. Salvaged material has been used in the restoration where possible. Lime plaster makes for breathable walls. The water comes from a natural spring. There is on-site recycling collection and composting. Only biodegradable detergents are used and linen is dried on the line. All appliances are energy efficient. Organic food is grown on site or sourced locally. The owners encourage guests to visit local cultural events, markets and learn about local crafts.
