How does Portugal Yurt Retreat minimise its impact on the environment and contribute to a sense of place?

To reduce their draw on natural resources, the owners have taken a number of environmentally friendly measures, and continually look to improve. All energy is generated using both solar and hydro systems, off the grid. The hydro system is run by water from the ravine. In summer, hot water is from solar and in the winter, wood is used to heat the water. The owners are restoring their house using their own wood, and building as much as possible with lime. The drinking and washing water is pumped from a 100m borehole. All toilets are composing, so flush-free.  They recycle as much as possible, and all food waste is composted for use in the garden.  They make their own natural soap and washing liquid, and guests are asked to bring biodegradable washing products so chemicals do not enter the water stream.

The owners grow fruits and vegetables as much as possible in their garden, and do not use artificial fertilizers and chemicals. Almost all of the food is seasonal, what isn’t grown in the garden is purchased from local markets or directly from local growers. To minimise the impact on the retreat and its peaceful surroundings, a small valley in Central Portugal, the owners encourage guests to arrive by public transport, and are happy to collect guests who arrive at the nearby coach station. If guests are interested, the hosts are keen to spend time sharing information and discussing their sustainable living practices including organic gardening, setting up a solar system or hydro system, building with lime, making soaps and detergents.
