Details of Pont Esgob
On a sunny, sheltered little plateau right in the Black Mountains in the Eastern Brecon Beacons National Park, Pont Esgob feels genuinely ancient. Stay here for the peace and quiet, the open landscape views, and the chance to explore one of the most picturesque parts of Wales. With a view of Sugar Loaf Mountain, it's the ideal location to read Bruce Chatwin's classic novel 'On the Black Hill'.
Managed by award-winning agency Under the Thatch, Pont Esgob is a charming, historic gem - with a stone tile roof, faded limewashed walls, and a remarkably well preserved 17th century oak screen.
Features:
- Locally-made modern, efficient and effective woodburning stoves (can be supplemented with electric heaters)
- Pretty gardens with access to the river (take care with toddlers)
- Neuadd: the main room is little changed since it was built in the early 1600s. There is a large fireplace (with wood-burner), around which curls the original stone staircase
- Original flagged floor as well as wonderful oak screen and door through to the kitchen
- Large dining table and windows with views to the front and back
- Modern and practical kitchen with solid wood worksurfaces and a five burner gas hob. Fridge-freezer and usual stock of cutlery, pots, pans etc. (No microwave)
- Victorian sitting room with French doors to the garden letting in plenty of light, and views to the river
- Wi-fi (free, bring own laptop), TV/DVD, CD player & radio
- Large double bedroom with original oak floor and lovely views over the hills
- Note that the only way to access the bathroom and childrens room is through the main bedroom
- A small bunk room is fine for kids (note that the beds are 182cm long rather than the usual 200cm)
- Bathroom with bath and power shower over, toilet, wash hand basin and electric heated towel rail
- Stone patio area & lawns
- Low stone wall between the garden and the riverbank - note potential danger for adventurous toddlers
- The picturesque turf-roofed cedar shed in the garden houses the washing-machine and dryer, hoover and ironing board, garden chairs, hot-water boiler and extra logs
- Parking for one car, or two at a squeeze
