How does Overcombe House minimise its impact on the environment and contribute to a sense of place?
To minimise its draw on energy, low energy bulbs and fittings have been installed. Where possible, linens are dried and aired naturally. When appliances have reached the end of their useful life and are deemed beyond economical repair, new energy efficient versions are purchased. To minimise landfill waste, recycling bins are provided throughout to encourage waste management, extra care is taken to reuse things where possible, and excessive packaging is avoided for all purchases. All suitable kitchen and garden waste is composted. Water saving devices have been installed in toilets, on showers and taps. All cleaning supplies are eco friendly. Water butts are used to collect rain water for use in the garden and cleaning exterior surfaces.
The owners support the local economy by purchasing from local suppliers and producers where possible, and also try to use as much organic and fair trade produce as possible. When purchasing any item, strong consideration is taken regarding the distance the product has travelled, which helps support local & regional producers and reduce carbon emissions. Guests are encouraged to arrive by public transport and there are plenty of opportunities for a car-free day out. The aim of Overcombe House is to ensure guests enjoy the many unique attributes Dartmoor has to offer whilst constantly seeking new ways to reduce their carbon footprint and minimise any harmful effects the enterprise may have on the environment, thereby demonstrating their commitment to preserving Dartmoor National Park for future generations. Their continuous efforts in conserving Dartmoor and best environmental practice have earned them a Dartmoor First award as well as Gold from the GTBS.
