How does Orkney Crofts minimise its impact on the environment and contribute to a sense of place?

To reduce their draw on energy, a ground source heat pump was installed for water and heating. All properties have maximum internal insulation, all appliances are A rated or better and all lighting is low energy. To reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, only plastics and non-biodegradable material leaves the cottages, multiple composting facilities are available to all and glass waste is collected for disposal through community recycling. All hampers are stocked exclusively with local produce. Guests are encouraged to shop locally and local buyers guide are made available. Guests are actively encouraged to arrive by cycle.

The owners’ philosophy has been centered on the pursuit of environmentally sustainable, low impact and responsible practices both throughout the construction phase and now in business management. They have designated 7 acres as a wildlife and bird sanctuary and have planted 3500 trees and shrubs to maximize biodiversity in Orkney. Additionally they garden 3 acres primarily with native British plants.
