How does Old Church Cottages minimise its impact on the environment and contribute to a sense of place?
Having held Gold from GTBS since 2007, Old Church Cottages has implemented a wide number of green initiatives, including the use of solar panels for hot water and insulating the buildings in excess of building requirement standards. The church has secondary glazing installed, thus preserving the original stained and leaded windows. All new/replacement electrical appliances are A rated or better.
All waste is separated in bins for waste, recyclable materials and hazardous items in accordance with the local authorities recycling guidelines, and in addition each cottage is provided with an individual composting bin, complete with instructions. There are also extensive composting activities occurring in the garden. Rainwater and laundry water are harvested for use on the garden. Water is metered and the usage monitored. Liquid soap, shower gel and other cleaning materials are replenished from large volume containers. All toilet cisterns are fitted with hippos and all showers are fitted with eco-showerheads. All laundry and household cleaning is carried out using environmentally friendly products.
Information is provided identifying sources of locally-produced food for the self-catering guests. In addition when fruit and vegetables in season from the garden, they are offered to guests. Guests are encouraged to use the train to arrive and explore the area, and local bicycle hire facilities are also available in order to minimise their impact on Northumberland's stunning natural environment and biodiversity.
