Maesmawr has a unique private gallery open 11-4 Thursday - Sunday throughout most of the year. It houses a permanent collection of paintings, sculptures and enamel murals by the late international artist Stefan Knapp as well as works by a number of important contemporary Welsh artists.
The house, stables and outbuildings are an intriguing mix of Georgian, Tudor and Victorian architecture, set in lovely, mature gardens and farmland in beautiful countryside that offer wonderful exhibition spaces for sculpture. The house has recently been sensitively updated and offers spacious comfortable en suite rooms, with fantastic views of the historic Severn Valley and surrounding hills.
The owner holds fishing rights for the River Severn. Mid Wales Golf Club and Caersws tennis courts are a short walk away.
We are on the National Cycle route system, have plenty of space for bicycles and can offer overnight stabling/ grazing for horses.
The private gardens are full of fascinating plants as well as our own home-grown fruit and vegetables. We specialise in tasty, healthy and beautifully presented homecooked food. Our emphasis is on healthy eating using our own or locally sourced ingredients.
We can offer residential art courses and welcome visitors wh wish to use the grounds and studios to work in. The owner is an experienced, qualified art teacher. We are within walking distance of Caersws Station (The National Rail Network) and Local and National Bus Route stops.
Why is this a greener holiday?
To truly minimise the environmental impact, guests are encouraged to arrive by public transport: the nearest train station is Caersws. Guests can be collected by prior arrangement. From the Railway Station, turn left, walk to the Junction with the A470. Turn right and follow the A470 for about half a mile. At the Junction, turn right, cross another railway crossing and Maesmawr is about 50 yards on your right. Alternatively, having crossed the river bridge over the Severn, turn right into the Football ground, and under the railway; turn left in front of the tennis courts into our field. Walk straight ahead, into the property.
Onsite the owners have taken a number of green measures to reduce the environmental impact of their tourism business. They have installed a solar energy system. They use locally sourced products wherever possible. The hosts grow nearly all of the fruit and vegetables and use them in freshly prepared food. They compost all food, kitchen and garden waste and have their own free range chickens.
