How does Lodges at the Mains minimise its impact on the environment and contribute to a sense of place?
The lodges are powered by solar panels and ground source heat pumps. The ground and water source heat pumps draw heat from the field and lochan in front of the lodges, and provide underfloor heating on all levels of the buildings. Solar panels heat the water and back up the ground source heat pump. The insulation in the lodges comprises of a mixture of cellulose and sheep's wool in the walls, roof and floors; natural, organic hypoallergenic material with high UV manufactured from recycled newspapers. There are heat-reflecting double glazed units throughout and the building is orientated to maximise solar gain. The lodges are built from untreated larch with reclaimed slate as the roofing material. Natural materials have been used where possible, including stone and wooden flooring throughout. All appliances are minimum A rated.
Recycling bins are provided to separate items into cans, glass, plastics, paper and card. All organic waste is disposed into composting bins. Bulk dispensers are used to eliminate the use of miniatures, and soaps and shampoos are sourced from a local producer using only natural materials. The water supply is metered; water is aerated at the taps and all dual flush toilet cisterns. The provisions in the welcome pack are all locally produced including bread, cheese, smoked salmon, milk, eggs, shortbread and oatcakes. Guests are encouraged to shop at local businesses including the butcher, baker and the organic vegetable grower.
