Why we've chosen Les Orangeries

The long cool pool beneath the orange trees, which give this amazing spot its name, will confirm that the owners here have the finest sense of how to relish and preserve an old house and its surroundings.

Tranquillity and harmony are acheived here through the trees, oasis of a pool, extensive wooden deck, rustic stone walls, giant flower baskets, orange trees, candles at night. The young owners (The Gautiers, an architect and his wife) fell in love with the place and used all their talent to blend 18th-century elegance with contemporary charm.

Stripped oak doors, exposed stone walls, cool stone floors glow with loving care, like valued old friends. Olivia has given each bedroom its own sense of uncluttered harmony, those facing the main road are double-glazed (earplugs could come in handy, too), the split-level suites are a delight. The Gautiers' passions include the old-fashioned games they have resuscitated for their guests to enjoy: croquet and skittles under the trees, two kinds of billiards, backgammon and mahjong. Olivia speaks English and her enthusiasm for the house, garden and guests is catching. Food is delicious, local, organic:  breakfast, in the garden in summer, is all you'd hope for the price.

Review by Lucy Symons
"If you need a sophisticated oasis in the centre of France, head for Les Orangeries – it’s a great stop off point if you are travelling further south, but honestly should be a destination in and of itself.  You could while away happy hours here, lolloping about in the garden, splashing in the pool, or stuffing your chops with imaginative grub from the restaurant. "
