Why we've chosen High Broadwood Hall Cottages

Review by Greentraveller's Lucy Symons
"In the middle of an AONB, you will find High Broadwood Hall, one big, unspoilt, low light pollution, tranquil place – and on a clear crisp winter night you can see the most amazing stars in the night skies.  Come here for the gorgeous peace and views, stay because of the brilliant welcome, excellent facilities (the towels…!) and on-going hospitality.

What the owners say:
High Broadwood Hall cottages are two new barn conversions in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, why not bring Fido, as pets are welcome? Offering picturesque views over the Allen Valleys, both cottages have been tastefully refurbished to a very high eco-friendly standard - they have recently gained the Green Tourism Business Scheme Gold award. The cottages are surrounded by farmland and set in a peaceful, unspoilt part of the world, you will find them an ideal place to relax and enjoy exploring the beautiful countryside at your own pace - either a self-guided walk or perhaps a cycle as High Broadwood Hall has been given the Walkers and Cyclists awards from Visit England.

The cottages sit in a farmland setting, surrounded by fabulous views down the Allen Valley towards Weardale and north to the Cheviot Hills. Staying in these luxury, self-catering barn conversions, refurbished to a very high standard, you will find they are a  great place for those who just wish to tour around, relax and for anyone who loves walking and cycling – you can set off from the front door.

High Broadwood Hall is 1¼ miles from the bustling village of Allendale, with shops, pubs, restaurants and tea rooms.  You may choose to explore the amazing, stunning landscapes and beauty spots by on and off-road walking or cycling; learn about the local mining and industrial history; go bird-watching; discover the wildlife – you can even report your findings to "Wildwatch"; join a craft workshop / learn a craft; go pony trekking; fish from a boat or from land.  At night why not check out the constellations in our dark skies.

Dove cottage is a cosy, upside-down one double bedroom cottage (extra single bed available on request), with beamed ceilings and a wood burner. Swallow's Rest has two bedrooms (double or twin).  Both are modern, well-equipped, with wooden floors.

1200 native broadleaf trees have been planted on the estate and there are plans afoot to plant more in the hopes of changing the two small pine dominated woodlands into native broadleaf woodlands – with the help of Forestry and AONB – with the intention of creating a wildlife habitat.
