Why we've chosen Henllys Lodge, Llandovery, Wales

An eco-friendly home in Carmarthenshire, this is an inspired rebuild of the old 17th century Lodge to the Henllys Estate. Set in a rural environment, it offers magnificent views of the UNESCO protected surrounding Welsh countryside. The smooth architectural design gives soft sweeping lines in the bedroom and the kitchen with an interesting swooping curve at the back of the building.

The under floor heating make for warm and comfortable oak floors while the glass doors give onto the garden's large lawn, wildlife pond and herbaceous borders filled with local native country cottage plants and herbs. The sunny terrace is perfect for outdoor meals and peaceful relaxation. Perfect for families, children are very much welcome in this green with at the bottom of the garden a double swing and the very large lawn is great for kicking a ball around. There is also easy parking for three cars and a lockable shed for mountain bikes.

This cottage's fully equipped kitchen, complete with a Rangemaster cooker, Eco - A rated fridge, freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer has locally sourced oak floors throughout and bespoke units with a reclaimed granite worktop. Enjoy a meal with family and friends at the large oak refectory table seating 8 where everyone can comfortably sit around, chatting and eating together.

The open plan downstairs area has a big lobby and the living room area has a sultry silk carpet. Works by local artists adorn the walls and snug linen sofas, central double-sided woodburning stove Freeview TV and DVD, CD player with Ipod dock and Wi-fi make this the perfect place to curl up in. There's even a table football game, great fun for all ages! For convenience an extra downstairs WC.

Carmarthenshire is known as ‘the Garden of Wales’. There’s beautiful countryside where visitors can enjoy walking, birdwatching, cycling, riding, and other outdoor pursuits, or alternatively visit local houses, sites of historic interest, castles and gardens. It is at the western edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, an area of special landscape, wildlife and cultural heritage, and Fforest Fawr Geopark, the area designated in 2005 by UNESCO because of its outstanding geological heritage.

Why is this a greener holiday?

To truly minimise the environmental impact, guests are encouraged to arrive by public transport: the nearest train station is Llandovery. From Swansea station, take the Heart of Wales train line (Shrewsbury final destination). There are four trains a day which stop at Llandovery station. Taxis are then available to Henllys Lodge from Llandovery station. Onsite the owners have taken a number of green measures to reduce the environmental impact of their tourism business, earning the Sustainable Building Award in 2008. The heating is provided by ground source heat and solar panels, and the building is fully insulated with sheep wool.

"Though an old building, it's been refurbished to a very modern standard, so expect a very polished kitchen, spick-and-span rooms, and all the modern creature comforts, such as Freeview TV and DVD, CD player with Ipod dock and Wi-fi. Great for families looking for a well-equiped break in the heart of the splendid countryside."
