How does East Penrest Farm minimise its impact on the environment and contribute to a sense of place?
This impressive converted barn was renovated using recycled timbers and slates, is extremely well insulated and sources all of its electricity from Ecotricity. The heating is supplemented by an efficient woodburner, which uses wood collected from the hedgerows, plus all of the appliances are A rated. All of the cleaning products used are environmentally friendly, and water use is metered to keep usage to a minimum.
Guests are actively enouraged to recycle, with a compost bin for extra green waste. The owners also provide locally-made soap and eco walls balls for guests to use in the washing machines. Guests are also encouraged to shop locally,with a list of nearby shops and markets. As this is an organic farm, guests are encouraged to have a tour with the owners and learn about how the the farm's organic philosophy. If you arrive by train, the owners are happy to pick you up from the station. The central location of East Penrest Barn means that guests are in an ideal location to explore Cornwall's coasts, moors and gardens, as well as the woods, fields and streams that make up the beautiful site just outside Dartmoor National Park.
