Why we've chosen Carmarthenshire Cottage

This is a romantic, traditional Welsh thatched cottage in the beautiful Carmarthenshire hills, simple, rustic, authentic - in fact this is possibly the most authentic Welsh cottage interior in Wales. Built from local materials in the old-fashioned way, in just one night as per tradition, it is a typical croglofft cottage – an open-plan living space with a sleeping loft over.

Staying here you can walk the local fields, visit charming small towns and restaurants, or there's easy access to the coast at Laugharne, and beaches. You can cook in the cast-iron stove or just sit by the fire.

This romantic Welsh cottage is beautifully furnished with traditional antiques. With a sitting area around the hearth, a small kitchen with basic amenities and a Cwpwrdd deuddarn (storage cupboard) downstairs, the sleeping loft is up some fairly steep stairs. There is also a small alcove on the ground floor under the loft with a traditional single Welsh box bed (you need to be reasonably agile to climb in). The stylish, contemporary bathroom is the only 21st Century touch.

The cottage has underfloor heating throughout and a woodburning cooking stove.

Downstairs:

  • Living/Dining room - With traditional Welsh antique furniture. Table, chairs and settle set against lime-washed walls. Impressive inglenook fireplace with woven hazel hood including modern woodburning cooking stove/fire. There is a two-seater sofa.
  • Kitchen - Beneath mezzanine, with basic electrical appliances, oven, hob, kettle etc. and a beautiful slate sink
  • Single 'box' bed (sleeps one adult) hidden privately out of the way behind the living area
  • Bathroom - spectacular semi-sunken contemporary bath, with views to the countryside, sink and loo.
