Why we've chosen Feather Down Farm's Canfields Farm

Active families should head down to stay at our organic farm, which nestles between the North and South Downs, as on- or off-road enthusiasts can stow their bikes on the car to get keen cyclist Sarah’s tips on tackling the 55-mile Downs Link. The rustic playground and play pitch laid out in front of the tents are the work of Tim, who has made the scrum-half position in Cranleigh’s first team for a record-breaking 22 years. He’ll also show you our fantastic bluebell woods for den-building, stream-damming and deer-, butterfly- and woodpecker-spotting.

Canfields is also an ideal base for group outings to enjoy horse racing at Glorious Goodwood, the opera at Glyndebourne, polo at nearby Hurstwood and the wonderful summer music concerts at Petworth – and not forgetting the five golf courses within five miles of the farm. Catching your breath at the end of the day, you can slow cook and barbecue our wonderful organic beef and veal, whilst you look out over the commanding views of the South Downs and the sea beyond. We were awarded ‘Most Improved Farm’. Come and see why – you deserve it!

Greentraveller's Insight: The Canfields Farm Experience
This really is treat for those families with energy to burn! The play pitch just outside the tents offers up football, badminton, rounders and vollyball, while if that doesn't wear you out, owner Tim can take you out into the woods and get you involved in a whole host of other activities. There's also excellent walking opportunities along the South Downs Way, canal boating trips available, and a handful of restaurants and pubs to frequent in nearby Rudgwick.

The Featherdown Farm Tent
The tents are large enough to fit six people – a maximum of five adults and one child up to 12 years old. Cooking & heating is provided by a cosy wood-burning stove, plus you'll get one crate of firewood provided per day. There is an ample living area (45 square metres), which includes a flushing toilet and spacious, comfortable beds. Each tent includes bed and kitchen linen, the tent’s kitchen has cold running water and there are hot showers on site.

Highlights:

  • Woodland activities
  • Organic farmland
  • Play pitch for children
  • Close to South Downs Way

Why is this a greener holiday?

To truly minimise the environmental impact, guests are encouraged to arrive by public transport: the nearest train station is Warnham, just an hour away ride away from London. From there it’s just a short taxi ride to the farm: see www.traintaxi.co.uk.

Onsite the accommodation is very low impact, as the tents are effectively off-grid. There is no electricity and lighting is by candle. Heating and cooking is done on a wood-burning stove. The hot tubs are also wood burning. Much of the produce in the honesty shops is local sourced, either from the farm or other nearby suppliers. There is a wide range of low impact activities on-site for families to enjoy, discover nature and avoid use of additional transport for the duration of their holiday.
