How does Cambo House minimise its impact on the environment and contribute to a sense of place?
Having been awarded Silver from the GTBS, Cambo has implemented a number of green initiatives to reduce their draw on natural resources. In terms of energy, energy efficient lighting is used throughout the house, and many are activated by sensors so comes on only as / when required. The majority of appliances have good ratings, and old equipment is replaced with more efficient products when the items cannot be repaired. To minimize the amount of waste sent to landfill, recycling bins are provided for guest use so paper, plastic, card, aluminum and all coloured glass recyclables can be separated. Water savers have been implemented in cisterns throughout many areas of the house, and are being installed elsewhere as renovations take place. Rainwater is harvested for use in the garden.
The vast majority of the food served is sourced very locally. Fruit, vegetables and flowers grown in the walled Victorian garden are for guests use. Both this garden and the surrounding farm grow organically. To minimise their impact on the stunning St Andrews region, guests are encouraged to arrive car-free either on foot from coastal paths, or the public transport via the hourly bus service from St Andrews to Leven.
