How does Brighton House minimise its impact on the environment and contribute to a sense of place?
Brighton House has been awarded Gold by the GTBS and has implemented many green, energy-saving initiatives. A contract has been arranged with their electricity suppliers to ensure that all energy is from renewable sources such as wind turbines. The guest house is fitted with environmentally-friendly low wattage bulbs and a recent refurbishment has ensured insulation of the highest possible standards. In line with their aim to economise on gas consumption, the owners have installed a sustainable control system for the central heating that allows restricted heating for unoccupied rooms, doing much to reduce wastage. A recent extension to the kitchen and dry store has allowed the owners to fit a sedum roof providing added insulation and more green space for the immediate environment.
Having arranged regular recycling collections with the local Brighton recycling cooperative, Brighton House also ensures all bio-degradable waste is processed through a wormery which, in turn, supplies excellent and rich compost for the gardening and planting projects. Each guest room has two waste baskets so recycling can be separated. All en-suite baths, showers and wash-basins are provided with specialised hygienic soap dispensers made specifically for b&bs and the hospitality industry. This helps reduce wastage of both packaging and un-used soap products. In terms of food, the breakfast is predominantly organic and locally sourced, offering wild salmon, organic ham and Sussex jam. In addition, the company car has been converted to run on Liquid Petroleum Gas. Guests receive plenty of info on attractions within walking distance of the accommodation, including the Royal Pavillion, Brighton Museum and a selection of city walks.
