"Don’t let the large modernist exterior put you off, this is one of the best family-friendly hotels in the country. I’ve visited this hotel several times over the last three years and have always found the staff extremely friendly, the facilities for kids are first class, as is the food and the sea views in both the dining area and lounge."

How does Bedruthan Steps Hotel and Spa minimise its impact on the environment and contribute to a sense of place?

Having been awarded Gold by the GTBS, Bedruthan Steps' energy saving initiatives include an 88% efficient condensing boiler system, 38 solar panels to heat the outside pool, key-card energy activation systems in bedrooms, light sensors in public washrooms, comprehensive insulation and a fridge recapture system. The hotel has a 100% green energy tarrif, with the entire supply being generated by renewable energy sources. All of the hotel's toilets have small cisterns and dual flushes, the taps and showers have aerators, plants are watered with collected rainwater and the water harvested from the roof of the Ocean Spa provides the water used for flushing the Spa's toilets.

It is possible to recycle glass, paper, plastic, aluminium, cellophane, cartridges and batteries, while food waste can be composted and used either on the grounds, or by employees at home. The packed lunch containers are made from recycled, compostable materials and products are ordered in bulk and decantered wherever possible. The hotel's 'buy local, buy responsible' policy ensures that at least 70% of the produce and ingredients are sourced from Cornwall and the South West. There's also a discount for all guests that arrive on foot, by bike or by bus, plus there are facilities and services for cyclists and walkers, including the lengthy stretch of Mawgan Porth beach, and miles of North Cornwall coastline just minutes from the hotel.
