Have a greener holiday at Aurora B&B:

How does Aurora B&B minimise its impact on the environment and contribute to a sense of place?

Having earned Gold in the GTBS, Aurora B&B has undertaken a wide range of green measures to reduce their environmental impact. Electricity is monitored and generated from an energy efficient boiler and water is heated from a solar hot water system. The dining room was designed to maximize solar gain year around. All appliances are A rated or better and low energy lighting is on timers where appropriate throughout the building. Rainwater is collected from the high tech polytunnel roof for use in the polytunnel and garden.

Separate recycling bins are provided for guest use and the composter takes all kitchen waste, turns it into soil which is re-used to grow produce. The B & B is part of a pilot project using tumbler composting system & wormeries as well as involved in other community projects to reduce waste to landfill collectively. In previous years, recycling and composting initiatives have taken care of 65% of waste, with only 35% sent to landfill, and each year the B&B undertakes more efforts to reduce this further. Purchases are made in bulk where possible and individually packaged portions are not used, for example our handmade soap is cut into appropriate sizes for guest stays.

Green cleaning methods consist of handmade cleaning products from natural materials, as well as the use of eco-cloths, laundry balls and soap nuts. Meals served are made from organic, free-range and locally sourced ingredients as much as possible, including locally sourced salmon and free-range lamb. Salads and herbs are grown in the garden, homemade bread is made from organic flour and yogurt is made daily with organic milk. The B&B is located in a conservation area on the edge of a sheltered sea loch - Loch Torridon, in the North West Highlands of Scotland, within an area known as Wester Ross, and guests are provided with many suggestions on car-free days out to explore this stunning area with as little impact as possible.

Nearest train station: Strathcarron Station - 20 miles away. Inverness-Kyle line

Directions from station:
Some day trains are met by the minibus to Shieldaig. Very few taxis. If you are planning to come by train please contact us, before booking, to discuss an earlier entry time. Unfortunately in this remote, unpopulated area we do not have very joined up public transport; so the reality is that most people arrive by car, stay a good while & do minimal mileage when here.
