How does 2 Danby Cottages minimise its impact on the environment and contribute to a sense of place?
Having been awarded Gold from GTBS, 2 Danby Cottages has implemented a wide range of green measures. To reduce its draw on natural resources, the cottage is fully insulated to well above building regs requirements and is fully double glazed. It is fitted with solar panels to heat water and photovoltaic panels to generate electricity. The boiler is a new balanced flue condensing unit which runs at 97% efficiency. Recycling bins are provided throughout and using refillable soap and washing up liquid containers reduces waste sent to landfill. There are two water butts gathering rainwater to be used in the garden.
A welcome basket of local produce is provided, plus advice on locally sourced food. To encourage guests to arrive car-free to reduce their impact on the Forest of Dean’s natural environment and biodiversity , the owners offer to pay the first delivery charge of the nearest supermarket if guests come on foot or bike or public transport. One of the owners uses a wheelchair and the cottage is therefore assessed as having M2 accessibility with no thresholds, ramps to front door and garden, ground floor bedroom with en-suite wetroom which is equipped with support rails and folding shower stool. Kitchen has lowered worktop and easygrip implements and kettle.
